The town is the seat of Niobrara County. The town was established in July 1886, by Frank S.

Lusk, a famous Wyoming rancher, partner in the Western Live Stock Company, and stockholder in the Wyoming Central Railway.

Cattle ranching remains the major industry in the town of Lusk.

The town of Lusk is known for being the governmental center of county of the least populated county in the least populated state in the US.

Lusk 1.2 Lusk Post Office Within two years, the stage coach route between Cheyenne, Wyoming and Deadwood, South Dakota bringed freight, including salt pork and whiskey.

Lusk (1857 1930) was a famous Wyoming rancher and stockholder in the Wyoming Central Railway.

In 1877, Lusk traveled to the Wyoming Territory for the first time on personal company and left highly impressed with the citizens and the area.

In 1879, easterly Colorado had grown to the point that Lusk, along with his partners began seeking options outside of the area. His thoughts were recorded in the 1923 Annals of Wyoming: Quarterly Bulletin: My partners were favorable to moving into easterly Colorado near the Nebraska state line but I remembered the citizens I had met earlier in Wyoming and those I had later met were a fine class of citizens and I decided we would go to Wyoming. Lusk Lusk and the Western Live Stock Company appeared in the Wyoming Territory in 1880 via Denver, establishing the Node Ranch, about 15 miles (24 km) east of present-day Lusk.

A year later, he bought some territory about 3 miles (5 km) outside of Lusk, which encompassed the Running Water Stage Station.

Lusk established a hay ranch on the property.

US Post Office - On Route 20 - 15 miles southeast of Lusk Lusk Post Office After establishing his three ranch properties, it became clear that the nearest postal service was positioned in Rawhide Buttes, 15 miles (24 km) southeast of the hay ranch, actually Route 20.

In response, one of the partners in the Gilmer and Salisbury Express Stage told Lusk that he should set up a postal service at the ranch, which would furnish for bringy of the mail, clean water requiring him to make the ride to Rawhide Buttes.

When Lusk sent in the application to the Post Office Department, everything was complete, but he didn't indicate a name for the postal service.

When asked about it later, Lusk told the star route representative that he was "busy and told him to do whatever he thought would, without a doubt, establish a postal service for us.

He told me he had suggested that it be called 'Lusk' and in due course of time it was so established". While Frank Lusk had been a prosperous cattleman, he was titled as a director and only resident stockholder of the company.

Letters of incorporation listed the base of operations as Lusk, Wyoming. While Lusk was the only postal service in Wyoming on the entire (proposed) line and was titled as the place of company of the business in its incorporation papers, it wasn't officially established until July of that year, when barns engineers laid the first plat for the town.

That same year, the suburbs of Douglas, and Casper were officially established in the same manner by Lusk, on behalf of the Wyoming Central Railway. Silver was identified in the hills encircling Lusk, which brought a steady stream of miners to the area.

Lusk is positioned at 42 45 38 N 104 27 10 W (42.760674, -104.452729). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town has a total region of 2.07 square miles (5.36 km2), all of it land. The town is 20 miles (32 km) west of the Nebraska border and sits at 5,000 feet (1,500 m) above sea level, surrounded by the southeastern extension of the Black Hills National Forest.

Lusk experiences a dry humid continental climate (Koppen climate classification Dfb) with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers.

18.3% of inhabitants were under the age of 18; 6.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 27% were from 25 to 44; 29.1% were from 45 to 64; and 18.7% were 65 years of age or older.

The ethnic makeup of the town was 97.86 percent White, 0.21 percent African American, .62 percent Native American, .14 percent Asian, .41 percent from other competitions, and .76 percent from two or more competitions.

There were 611 homeholds out of which 27 percent had kids under the age of 18 residing with them, 50.7 percent were married couples residing together, 8 percent had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 37.5 percent were non-families.

Individuals residing alone accounted for 35 percent of all homeholds and 17 percent of those residing alone were over the age of 65 years.

Within the town limits, the populace was spread out with 22.4 percent under the age of 18, 7.7 percent between 18 24, 26.5 percent between 25 44, 24.1 percent between 45 64, and 19.2 percent who were over the age of 65 years.

About 9.2 percent of families and 14.2 percent of the populace were below the poverty line, including 22.7 percent of those under age 18 and 13.1 percent of those age 65 or over.

While the Parks Department offers recreational opportunities through the golf course and swimming pool, the Lusk Recreation Department offers competing and noncompetitive sports programming for both youth and grownups.

The Parks and Recreation Department maintains the town swimming pool and three parks, including Washington Park, Northside Park, and Audrey Park.

Open May through October, all the parks offer playground equipment. The swimming pool, known as "Lusk Plunge", is positioned at Northside Park. The department also maintains the nine-hole Lusk Municipal Golf Course.

The municipal government of Lusk encompass a mayor and four council members, representing some people region wide.

The Women's Center of the Wyoming Department of Corrections is positioned in Lusk. The center was initially directed by the Wyoming Board of Charities and Reform, until it was dissolved as a result of a State Constitutional Amendment passed in November 1990. Public education in the town of Lusk is provided by Niobrara County School District #1.

Local schools include Lusk Elementary/Middle School (grades K 8) and Niobrara County High School (grades 9 12).

The Wyoming Virtual Academy, an online K-12 enhance school, is also based in Lusk.

The primary everyday journal in the town of Lusk is the Lusk Herald, owned by the News Media Corporation, which offers both print and online editions. Television transmitting is offered through Comcast Cable, Dish Network, and DIRECTV service providers.
