The town is titled for John Hoback, a mountain man who guided the Astor party through the region in 1811.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the CDP has a total region of 44.35 square miles (114.9 km ), of which, 43.46 square miles (112.5 km ) of it is territory and 0.9 square miles (2.32 km ) of it (2.0%) is water. The populace density was 8.2 citizens per square mile (3.2/km ).
